Relief prints are incised into a flat surface or wood and the flat surface is inked and printed.

Intaglio prints are made by incising the surface of a metal or plastic plate, this may be chemically or manually. Traditional etching involves the use of acids or agents that eats away any exposed metal, more recently more environmentally friendly chemical methods have been developed. Mezzotint requires the use of a special tool called a rocker to create a surface to hold ink, this surface prints flat black and is then scaped to create the image. the more it i scraped the lighter the print.
